You’re Pregnant – Top 5 Tips for staying cool this summer

With hormones flowing around your body, pregnancy tends to keep you at a slightly higher temperature than normal.  Add to that the summer heat wave, and you may be feeling very hot indeed!  Check out our suggestions on how to avoid some of the symptoms that many pregnant women experience at this time of year!

1.  Stay in the Shade

It is a great idea to stay in the Shade whilst the weather is hot.  You can make up a spray bottle with cold water and spritz your face and feet as often as required. Use a good sunscreen, especially one for the face, to ensure that your skin is protected as it is more common to experience chloasma during pregnancy, which can cause brown patches on the face.

2.  Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is essential during pregnancy and it is even more important when the sun is shining.  Take a bottle of water with you everywhere you go, and if possible ensure that you drink a minimum of 8 glasses per day.

3.  Foot Baths

Sit your feet in a bowl of cold water when you get home.  You could add a few drops of essential oil (check which ones are safe to use in pregnancy)

4.  Elevate your feet

Whenever possible get those feet up and try and prevent them from swelling up.  Having a lie down in the day is a great idea, even if you don’t get to sleep, you will still have rested and elevated your arms and legs.  Try and keep salt intake to a minimum to reduce water retention.

5.  Wear natural fabrics

Keeping your clothes light and cool and wearing natural fabrics where possible.  Try to wear cotton underwear, and make sure your bedding is cotton too.

Enjoy the sunshine!
